LVEDC to Spotlight Lehigh Valley During U.S. Senior Open Championship
By Colin McEvoy on June 20, 2022
One of the biggest championship events in senior golf is coming to the Lehigh Valley, and the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation (LVEDC) is using that prestigious event to highlight the region from an economic development perspective.
The 42nd U.S. Senior Open Championship will be held this week (June 23-26) at the Saucon Valley Country Club in Upper Saucon Township, and LVEDC has invited decision-makers in business development, site selection, and commercial real estate to attend.
“As the spotlight is on the Lehigh Valley during this world-class sporting event, it will provide an excellent opportunity for us to make sure these key decision-makers are familiar with one of the fastest-growing markets of its size in the United States,” said LVEDC President & CEO Don Cunningham.
In addition to seeing the world’s top senior golfers compete, LVEDC’s influential guests will learn about the Lehigh Valley economy and how the region continues to grow, change, and evolve.
During the U.S. Senior Open Championship LVEDC will host visitors in a hospitality suite on the 17th hole, and members of LVEDC’s staff will share information about everything the Lehigh Valley economy has to offer.
LVEDC regularly engages with site selectors and corporate location consultants. The organization recently hosted a bus tour with members of that profession who had registered for I.CON East, a major conference for the industrial real estate sector hosted by NAIOP.
LVEDC also regularly engages with organizations like the Site Selectors Guild, the national professional association of site selectors, location consultants, and national industrial commercial brokers. One of its members, Jay Garner of Garner Economics, provided an assessment that helped inform the creation of LVEDC’s newly-adopted strategic plan.
“The LVEDC board feels the U.S. Senior Open Championship is a great opportunity to showcase the Lehigh Valley to both companies and the real estate professionals they rely on to see why the region is a great investment for companies looking to grow,” said Edward Dougherty, Chair of the LVEDC Board of Directors.
This year marks the third time the United States Golf Association (USGA) has selected the Saucon Valley Country Club to host the U.S. Senior Open Championship. It also previously hosted the prestigious event in 1992 and 2000.
The event will be televised by NBC and its affiliated networks over the four days of the event. The Lehigh Valley’s national exposure from this prestigious golfing event follows on the heels of several recent national media stories about the region including a New York Times story about the city of Easton, a story on American Public Media’s Marketplace program, and a segment on CBS Sunday Morning.
The 42nd U.S. Senior Open Championship will be the 90th USGA championship to be held in Pennsylvania, the most of any state, according to Hank Thompson, the Senior Director of the U.S. Open.
“The golf courses in this state are incredible and the ability to be able to come here and be able to test these players inside of 18 holes over the course of four days is ultimately what drives it,” Thompson said, according to WNEP.
