By Colin McEvoy on October 8, 2018
Each week, Karianne Gelinas, Director of Talent Supply with the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation (LVEDC), will provide an update or additional information from its ongoing initiative to identify talent supply and demand issues in the region and create a strategy that results in a broader, ongoing understanding of the Lehigh Valley workforce. (See past updates.)
To increase our understanding of regional workforce demand, we have first focused in on five strategic industry sectors: health care, transportation, warehousing, and logistics, life science research and manufacturing, high-value business services, and manufacturing (advanced and food & beverage).
These sectors are targeted for at least one of the following three characteristics:
- They already employ a large portion of our workforce
- They are poised for future growth and they are in sectors for which the Lehigh Valley provides distinct advantages for business recruitment
- When speaking with business leaders, these targeted sectors have shared concerns about gaps between the skills of potential employees and the demands of the jobs they are seeking to fill
We asked the target sector employers: How important is a skilled workforce to your operations in the Lehigh Valley? Their answers are broken out by industry sector in the graph below with 90 percent of all Lehigh Valley employers stating that a skilled workforce is very important or important.
