Airfare prices are constantly fluctuating and finding an affordable flight can be a challenge. Unless you’re flying out of the Lehigh Valley.

The Lehigh Valley International Airport (LVIA) has ranked 12th-most affordable in average cost per airfare among the 101 most searched airports in the nation, according to a recent report by Cheapflights.com.

That’s a 61-spot jump from its 73rd-place ranking in 2015, according to Cheapflights.com. The average airfare at LVIA for the month of June was $258, compared to an average of $340 from the 101 airports on the list.

“Our mission is to provide customers with competitively-priced air service and this report provides support we are meeting that expectation while maintaining the highest level of customer service,” said Charles Everett, Executive Director of the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority (LNAA).

The Airport Affordability Index tracks the average airfare to a common list of popular domestic and international destinations and compares it to the previous year’s rankings, according to Cheapflights.com.

The other Pennsylvania airports ranked in the report were Philadelphia International (10) and Harrisburg International (86). The top five airports included Long Beach, Calif.; Dallas/ Fort Worth International, Texas; LaGuardia, N.Y.; General Mitchell International, Wis.; and Minneapolis-St. Paul International, Minn.

LVIA is a strong partner with the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation (LVEDC) when it comes to promoting regional economic growth. The airport’s role in economic development was highlighted during a meeting of the Pennsylvania Senate Aviation Caucus earlier this year.

The aviation industry employs more than 100,000 people in the United States and contributes $10.8 billion to the national economy, including $5.5 billion for airport management and operations, and $5.3 billion for aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services.

Allegiant Air, American, Delta, and United have 10 nonstop destinations out of LVIA, to both leisure destinations and major airline hubs with connections to the world. The airport’s nonstop destinations include: Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Myrtle Beach (seasonal), Newark, Orlando, Punta Gorda and Tampa Bay.

The LNAA is also currently conducting a brief survey for local businesses about travel habits to Pittsburgh and other potential destinations, as part of its ongoing effort to obtain important feedback and support for interested airlines. The survey can be found here.

Darren Betters, Director of Business Development with LNAA, said the authority is engaged in preliminary discussions with an airline to potentially add service to Pittsburgh and other destinations not currently on the list of non-stop service from LVIA.

“The LNAA is committed to providing competitively priced air service to the Lehigh Valley community and maintains an aggressive pursuit of opportunities for additional airline service,” Betters said.
