B. Braun Medical CEO Discusses Falling in Love with Lehigh Valley

By Colin McEvoy on September 24, 2020

LVEDC President & CEO Don Cunningham interviews B. Braun Medical Inc. (US) Chairman & CEO Jean-Claude Dubacher for the second entry in LVEDC’s executive virtual interview series.

Jean-Claude Dubacher is a true man of the world. Born and raised in Switzerland, he speaks four languages and was previously employed by Johnson & Johnson covering Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, before working for the German-based medical company B. Braun.

He didn’t know anything about the Lehigh Valley when he first visited, but he fell in love with the region right away: its parks and trails reminded him of the greens of his native Switzerland, while its central location in the Northeast provided easy access to the kind of cities he has often visited during his travels.

B. Braun of America Chairman & CEO Jean-Claude Dubacher has more than 15 years of experience in the healthcare industry.

“I called my wife and said, ‘You need to see this, this is a fantastic place,’” said Dubacher, who was named Chairman & CEO of B. Braun Medical Inc. (US) in August. “She came and then with the kids a few weeks later we came back from Europe to look at it again and we all loved it right away. … Of all our moves, I think this has been the easiest one for us.”

Dubacher was interviewed in the third entry in a weekly series the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation (LVEDC) is conducting with new corporate leaders at some of Lehigh Valley’s leading companies and largest employers.

“We’ve had a very interesting last 18 months here in the Lehigh Valley, where no short of 15 of our major employers at our most prominent companies have named new leaders, presidents and CEOs,” said LVEDC President & CEO Don Cunningham, who conducted the interview.

“Because of our situation in these recent times of not being able to gather together, we thought the next best way was to do some video interviews so you all could get to know the new folks leading our companies, and they could tell a bit of their stories,” Cunningham said.

The Lehigh Valley Health Network is the presenting sponsor for the series, with Capital Blue Cross as the premier sponsor. Gold sponsors include BB&T, now Truist and Fitzpatrick, Lentz & Bubba. Crayola and Good Shepherd Rehabilitation are event sponsors for the series; Follett LLC is the interview sponsor, Countess Communications is the production sponsor, and ArtsQuest is the venue sponsor.

New videos are released each Thursday at 3 p.m. on LVEDC’s Facebook page. The full video interview with Dubacher can be viewed below.

Current and previous archived videos can be found here and on LVEDC’s YouTube channel. The interview subject on Thursday, Oct. 1, will be Michael Spigel, CEO of Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network.

Dubacher has more than 15 years of experience in the healthcare industry, and joined B. Braun as President of B. Braun Medical in 2019 before accepting his current position. He has a law degree from the University of Zurich in Switzerland, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Among other products, B. Braun makes IV solutions that have been crucial for the treatment of COVID-19 patients, particularly in New York when the cases there were particularly bad, Dubacher said.

The company received several emergency use authorizations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration due to the pandemic, which led the company to innovate and quickly manufacture products quickly, he said.

“We really had the chance to live up to our commitment to help and I was very proud of the whole organization, and the difference we could make for the customers and especially for the patients,” Dubacher said.

B. Braun is in the process of expanding its manufacturing facilities in Hanover Township, Lehigh County, where it makes IV products like connection and set devices, among other items. During the interview, Dubacher discusses the company’s commitment to manufacturing domestically, as well as the talented workforce it draws upon from Lehigh Valley.

Other upcoming interviews in the series will include:

ArtsQuest provided access to indoor space large enough for safe distancing for the interviews. There is no audience for the interviews, which will adhere to public health and social distancing standards.
